Manistee

Downtown Manistee
Downtown Manistee
Dubbed the Victorian Port City and built by the lumber barons, scenic, small-town Manistee once was home to more millionaires per capita than any other town in the U.S., and their gingerbread architecture remains. Now it's a great town for tourism, 10 West Studios and Michigan's burgeoning film industry, the Little River Casino, energy and manufacturing. Follow downtown's curvy streets, where interesting eclectic shops and eateries wind along the Manistee River and huge freighters glide past. The Riverwalk takes you down to one of two of the town's gorgeous Lake Michigan beaches; the remodeled Blacker Airport makes getting to Manistee so much easier.

Craftworkers create their own new entrepreneurial class

There is no requirement for a time card or a boss to be part of the working world. Some folks have made a name for themselves, and an income, by being a bit more crafty than the rest.

Michigan College of Optometry has new vision at Ferris State

The only optometry school in Michigan receives a boost to its education program and health care delivery services in a new facility on the campus of Ferris State University. Second Wave writer Neil Moran talks with the school's dean about the move.

Michigan communities are dancing to a new beat

Placemaking is important to the future of the community you live in, even though you may have never really heard of it until now. MSHDA and the Small Business Administration of Michigan are trying to change that.

A three-hour tour? Not if you're using public transportation

A trek around Michigan without the help of a car or airplane can be a difficult proposition, as the folks who embarked on the Michigan Transportation Odyssey found out. Our own Tom Clynes followed them along three days and over 350 miles to find out their thoughts and plans for Michigan's future transportation options.

Confer's Camera: Fogging up the lens

We sure love the way nature gives us amazing moments and we love the way photographers like our very own Brian Confer are able to capture them, as he did with this spring fog recently.

Complete Streets: Designing roadways for the benefit of all

Recently, the Michigan Environmental Council conducted a study with two focus groups. The results showed that state residents are more interested in seeing sidewalks and bike lanes--not just more roads. Amen to that, we say.

North x Northwest: Every job should be celebrated

We here at Second Wave believe that any job that is created or retained deserves its own story. Managing editor Sam Eggleston writes in this week's column about job growth and how companies can spread the word that they're hiring.

Embarking on an Odyssey: Traveling through Michigan by bus and train

If you've ever traveled from the southern edge of our great state to the northern reaches, then you probably are well aware that you can't just jump on a train and make the trek. That's something that needs to change and is the focus of the upcoming Michigan Odyssey, an event being undertaken by Transportation for Michigan.

You can be a part of the Odyssey

Across the state, people are focusing on transportation initiatives to help move Michigan toward a vibrant, connected future. You can be a part of that conversation at an upcoming event in Traverse City.

Confer's Camera: The calm after the storm

We're fortunate enough here at Northwest Michigan Second Wave to have talented photographer Brian Confer taking almost all of our photos. His ability to tell a story with photos is outstanding, as is evident with this picture he shot following "Snowmageddon" in the area last week.
