Several northwest Michigan companies are receiving grants from the
Michigan Strategic Fund this year for skilled trades training to help connect workers to jobs and match skills with employer needs.
The money comes from the state Skilled Trades Training Fund and totals $8.6 million across the state for 2015. It's administrated through local Michigan Works! agencies an goes to companies who commit to hiring workers who participate in the training programs funded, or to retaining existing workers who get additional training.
Rounded up by city, here are the companies who will be training and hiring locally. In Traverse City, Munson Medical Center was a big recipient, with $138,849; Star Crane and Hoist got $8,211; Great Lakes Stainless, Inc. got $11,025; Strata Design got $15,750; Elmer's Crane and Dozer got $15,645; Inforth Technologies got $12,867; and Tyson Foods, Inc. got $9,922.
In Harbor Springs, another big recipient was Moeller Aerospace Technology, receiving $171,211. Others there were Central Industrial Manufacturing, Inc. with $3,150 and Jervis B. Webb with $39,818.
Boyne City's LexaMar Corporation received $60,816, and Honeywell International in Boyne City got $10,185.
In Petoskey, Petoskey Plastics got $38,808; Brower Development and Construction got $1,575; and Northwest Design Group, Inc. got $4,341. Charlevoix's Wojan Window and Door Corp. received $34,240.
Grayling had two recipients: Weyerhaeuser received $12,600 and Grayling Generating Station received $25,200.
Ludington had several: Great Lakes Castings got $5,512; the Safetydecals.com division of Tye's Incorporated got $10,195; FloraCraft Corporation got $39,821; and House of Flavors got $1,244.
In Evart, Ventra Evart got $31,500; Link Industries in Indian River got $24,389; and TF-R, Inc. in Afton got $43,564.
And in northeast Michigan, two companies were awarded funds as part of an employment and training consortium. Sandvik Hyperion in West Branch received $13,135 and Tawas Plating Company in Tawas City received $14,647.
