opened on March 12, adding four jobs to Manistee and a flurry of customers to the city’s only full service meat market. Co-owners Deanne Berentsen, along with husband Lars, a butcher, could not be more pleased.
"We carry only USDA Choice Certified Angus beef," Deanne says. "New York strip steak, porter house, Delmonicos, flank steak, tenderloins, T-bones, filets, flat irons, everything. We’re well-known for our seasoned, marinated prime rib--and we do ship it."
Poultry and pork, and 20 varieties of sausages and brats that Lars creates in-house round out River Street Stock yard’s meat counter.
But do not forget the specialty alcohol and gourmet food items. The carryout shop has a full stock of craft and micro beers, including Northern Michigan’s largest selection of single bottle beers, along with other imported and domestic beers and liquors, according to Deanna, who says that many of the food and alcohol items she offers are Michigan-made.
"We have a nice deli with Panini's, wraps, salads and soups," Deanna says. "There are 25-35 salads to take home every day, including gourmet green salads made from artesian spring lettuce."
Patrons often take home salsas, barbecue grilling marinades and sauces, mustards and spices that line the store shelves as well.
"It’s great that we’re doing this well, because we have done very little advertising," Deanna says. "We post daily specials on our Facebook wall. That’s it. And it works very well."
