Northwest Michigan roads to be improved with several projects

Northwest Michigan will be home to several roads projects in 2014, as the state legislature approved a long list of the through the newly-created Roads and Risks Reserve Fund. 

 

The fund supports improvements for roads that are in need of repair throughout the state with a total of $230 million coming from the state's general fund, in addition to $121 million from the general fund which matches available federal transportation funding.

 

In northern Michigan, that means a roster of 16 projects that will be undertaken by Michigan Department of Transportation workers in the 2014 construction season. The total funding for the region is a little more than $10.5 million.

 

Lake County will get $350,000 to work on Brooks Road from 10 and ½ Mile Road to 12 Mile Road. Leelanau County will get $342,000 to work on Frederickson Road in Empire Township. Manistee County will get $800,000 to work on four miles of Nine Mile Road. Roscommon County will get $655,000 for improvements to I-75/M-18, including ramp upgrades.

 

In Wexford County, there are two projects: a $2 million reconstruction of Old U.S.-131 from Boon Road in Cadillac to M-42 in Manton; and $240,000 of related improvements to Boon Road from U.S.-131 to Seeley Road. Ogemaw County also has two projects, with $400,000 going to resurface, repair and re-ramp M-33 in Rose City and $1.1 million to improve M-55 from I-75 to M-33.

 

Grand Traverse County has several projects. $500,000 will go to improve U.S.-31/M-37; $1 million will go to improve the West Front Street Bridge in Traverse City; Cottage and Fenton Streets in Kingsley will be resurfaced at a total coast of $349,000; and $301,200 will go to improve Pierce, Front, Janet and Main streets in Fife Lake.

 

In Antrim County, the Old State Road will get $900,000 for improvements from Central Lake Village to Derenzy Road. In Presque Isle County, U.S.-23 will get $750,000 for resurfacing and ramp upgrades in Rogers City.

 

And in Emmet County, U.S.-31 will get $445,000 in the Bay View area of Petoskey for upgrades, and $400,000 from Liberty Street to East Mitchell Street, including the Mitchell Street Bridge, for resurfacing and repair.
