Have a working air conditioner or dehumidifier sitting around? Well, that piece of equipment that has just been taking up space in the garage can now mean a rebate on your next electric bill.

Traverse City Light & Power announced that it has started a program that has customers recycling their inefficient, yet still working, dehumidifiers and air conditioning units and receive a $15 credit on their next electric bill in return. Customers just have to bring their items to the Clean Up and Green Up Event on March 13 between 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will be at the former Tower Automotive facility at 280 Hughes Drive, the new home to American Waste's solid waste handling facility.

"By recycling inefficient dehumidifiers and air conditioners, L&P customers will save energy and be rewarded with a credit on their bill," says Jim Cooper, L&P communications manager.

L&P will also be providing rebate information on other incentives, which include rebates for purchasing a new dehumidifier or air conditioner.

The Clean Up and Green Up event is a free community-wide recycling event that encourages residents to bring in difficult-to-recycle items that have salvageable components or materials that can be reused.

While all community members can participate by recycling both working and non-working units, in order to qualify for the $15 bill credit from L&P, participants must be customers and the units turned in must still be in working condition, as required by the Michigan Public Service Commission's State Energy Optimization plan. Customers are asked to bring a copy of their electric bill to receive the credit.
