Story of James Earl Jones brings reporter to northern Michigan

An Mlive reporter recently did a series of articles and interviews chronicling the boyhood of James Earl Jones, as he grew up in rural northern Michigan.

Excerpt: James, she recalls, was a quiet child. She never noticed his stutter, maybe because he rarely talked, maybe because it did not matter to her.

"He was a good boy," she says, from the perspective of decades. "He was a really good boy. Not like some others." She is not talking about race. That never mattered to her. It is about people.
